ANGÉLICA GARCIA — BUTTERFLY

First ever independent release by experimental pop artist Angélica Garcia following the release of her critically acclaimed full length album, Gemelo (2024). Butterfly is a first look into Garcia’s new cyborg Latino sonic landscape. The song is bilingual Industrial ballroom, meets glitch hop, meets a narrative flow of magical realism.

Butterfly tells the story of a working club girl with admiration. While living in New York, Angélica briefly worked at the city’s largest gay night club, House of Yes. Garcia describes “impeccable outfits” and the staff and club girls as “keepers of magic”. In the song she honors “the level of personal power it takes to be a butterfly”. To be a butterfly means to live and express as a highly actualized version of self despite the intrinsic violence associated with late night club culture. An aggressive beat and a delicate chorus—all meant to express the intense juxtaposition her and her colleagues experienced on a nightly basis. Garcia also sees butterflies as a metaphor for her people and the daily violence Latinos and immigrants are subjugated to in the US. In her eyes, butterflies represent a connection between beauty and courage.
